SUBJECT: MEDIA REACTION - US-IRAN TALKS - TOKYO
1. LEAD STORIES: Monday morning's economic daily Nihon
Keizai Shimbun gave top play to an interview in Moscow
with Russian President Putin, who repeated Moscow's claim
to the Northern Territories and said that resolving the
territorial dispute with Japan would be difficult.
2. "US and Iran Should Hold Direct Talks on Nuclear
Issue" The moderate Tokyo Shimbun editorialized (6/4):
"Iran has been continuing to enrich uranium in complete
disregard for UNSC resolutions, and there is no
resolution in sight for this nuclear standoff. In an
attempt to break the impasse, the US and Iran should
follow up on their recent direct talks on the security
situation in Iraq and address the nuclear issue....
Iran's hard line is only serving to deepen the country's
international isolation. We again call on Tehran to make
the wise choice to abide by UNSC resolutions and
sincerely respond to the concerns of the international
community."
