1. LEAD STORIES: Wednesday morning's Yomiuri gave top
play to plans by the Ministry of Defense to provide the
US military with intelligence collected by the ASDF's
Base Air Defense Ground Environment (BADGE) system in the
event of a contingency in areas surrounding Japan.
2. "US Wins Support for New Iraq Policy" Cairo
correspondent Murakami of the conservative Sankei wrote
(1/17): "Secretary of State Rice, currently visiting the
Middle East, met Monday with Saudi King Abdullah in
Riyadh and asked him to support President Bush's new Iraq
policy.... Secretary Rice's visit to the Middle East is
aimed at winning support for the new policy from moderate
Arab states eager to act as mediators. Rice, who also met
Monday with Egyptian President Mubarak and other senior
officials, has generally been successful in (her aim)....
It appears that these moderate Arab states are supporting
the new US Iraq policy in the goal of gaining a greater
voice in what Washington does in the region. During their
meeting Monday, Rice obtained an agreement from Israeli
Prime Minister Olmert to meet with Palestinian President
Abbas in about three or four weeks, a move demonstrating
America's commitment to the Palestinian issue.
Nonetheless, given present US policy toward Israel, the
US is unlikely to heed Arab calls to seek peace by
applying pressure on Tel Aviv."
