SUBJECT: UN HUMAN RIGHTS COUNCIL ELECTION: ISRAEL TO
OPPOSE BELARUS, SUPPORT SLOVENIA
REF: STATE 63345
Classified By: Political Counselor Marc Sievers, Reason 1.4 (b) (d)
(C) Upon receipt of reftel May 10, PolCouns contacted MFA
Deputy Director General for United Nations and International
Organizations Aharon Leshno Yaar (A/S equivalent) to stress
the importance of Israel opposing Belarus and supporting
Slovenia and Bosnia in the May 17 UNGA election of new
members to the UN Human Rights Council. Leshno Yaar
confirmed that Israel will vote against Belarus and vote for
Slovenia. As for Bosnia, he said Israel would wait until
Sarajevo announced its candidacy before making a decision.
Leshno Yaar expressed concern that if both Slovenia and
Bosnia were candidates, it could split the vote and thus
ensure Belarus' election.
