1. (S) On March 20, MOFAT's Disarmament and
Non-Proliferation Division Deputy Director, Lee Kyu-ho, told
poloff that the ROKG had completed its investigation into
concerns that Iran was seeking to acquire mobile phone
jammers from a South Korean company (reftels) and had
determined that the sale did not occur. After the initial
contact in 2006, the ROK firm, for undetermined reasons,
received no further inquires from Iran. Puritech officials
also told the ROKG that it was getting out of the mobile
phone jamming business because it was not profitable.
2. (S) Lee stated that the ROK Ministry of Commerce,
Industry and Energy (MOCIE) would issue guidance warning ROK
companies that this kind of technology was controlled under
the Wassenaar Arrangement and should be handled appropriately.
