MERCURY ISSUES AT THE 24TH SESSION OF UNEP

1. Per reftel, Embassy delivered demarche on mercury issues
at the 24th session of the United Nations Environment
Programme's Governing Council (UNEP GC) to the Ministry of
Environment. The Director of Planning, Omar Ramirez, stated
that he and Minister Max Puig plan to attend the 24th session
of UNEP in Nairobi this coming February. Ramirez is aware of
the many important issues that will be raised at this
session, including mercury contamination. Embassy is
awaiting the response from the Ministry of Environment
regarding the reftel demarche. Ramirez stated to emboff that
Minister Puig plans to discuss the mercury issue this week.
Embassy will send a readout of that meeting per reftel.
