WILL VOTE FOR GAER
REF: A. STATE 130973
B. SANTO DOMINGO 1915
1. (SBU) On September 20, the Charge d'Affaires delivered Ref
A demarche on the re-election campaign for Felice Gaer, the
United States candidate for the UN Committee Against Torture.
Foreign Minister Morales Troncoso replied that the Dominican
Republic would vote for Gaer.
2. (SBU) The following are Post's responses to Ref A
questions:
Which host government official or officials will make the
final decision on the vote?
-- We believe that Foreign Minister Morales will make the
final decision.
Could a call from a senior-level Department official, either
to capital or Washington Embassy make a difference?
-- We believe that such a call is unnecessary given the
commitment already made by Morales.
