SUBJECT: MEDIA REACTION -EAST ASIA: CHINA, ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL
EMERGENCE
On January 18, conservative, influential newspaper-of-record "El
Mercurio" (circ. 129,000) ran an opinion piece by international
pundit Karin Ebensperger entitled "China Today and Always." Quote:
"The real global change is cultural: slowly, the parameters of
international relations will be shaped not only by Washington,
London or Berlin, but increasingly by Beijing.... As it had been in
the past for centuries upon centuries, China has returned to exert
its benevolent domination.... Whatever political path China takes,
it will have enormous pull not only in Asia but worldwide. Its
emergence in global markets has become the turn of the century's
most important political change; it has started an increasing
'de-westernization' world-wide. The economic - and cultural - axis
has moved to the Asia Pacific region."
