SUBJECT: MEDIA REACTION - DANGERS OF IPR PIRACY IN CHILE
On April 25, business and financial "Diario Financiero" (circ.
30,000) ran an editorial entitled, "New Anti-Piracy Bill." Quote:
"On Monday President Bachelet announced a new draft bill against
piracy...that in general terms will increase penalties for those who
commit this crime.... Our weakness in the area of protecting
intellectual property could hurt our credibility as a country. The
United States periodically notes the little or zero progress on our
part to fight this scourge. But this is not about reacting just
because of the demands imposed by that important trade partner. It
is about clearly understanding as a country the damage we cause to
all those who have dedicated time and resources to innovate and
create products. The United States will soon publish its 301
report, and then we will know whether we remain on its 'red list' or
have taken sufficient steps to be removed from that so indecorous
list."
