(C) E/POL Counselor spoke February 12 with Ambassador Carlos
Applegren, Director of the MFA's Office for North America and
Caribbean Affairs, and delivered reftel points. Appelgren,
who had represented Chile at the February 1 meeting in
Washington, said that Chile had already been making the pitch
to China, urging it - both at the UN and in Beijing - to
extend renewal for a year. Appelgren noted that Chile had
put it to China that a one-year extension had full support in
the region. Hence, the matter was important not only to
Haiti, but to China's friends in Latin America.
