SUBJECT: MEDIA REACTION - BOLIVIA
On January 23, conservative, independent "La Tercera" (circ.
101,000) ran an editorial entitled, "Evo Morales' First Year in
Office." Quote:
"Evo Morales' first year in office was poor in terms of generating
trust and guaranteeing stability.... Under Morales, La Paz has
finally joined the so-called axis of the 'new' left in the region,
led by Caracas, and formed also by Quito, Managua, and Havana,
taking an anti-globalization, anti-free market, and an anti-U.S.
stance, which does not represent the economic or political path that
Chile has chosen.... With regard to Chile, it is true that
President Morales has not used the maritime issue as an element of
distraction, in spite of his problems. But for Santiago and the
region, it is important for La Paz to rule a stable country that is
socially at peace. It is to be hoped that the Bolivian President's
second year in office is less discouraging than his first."
