1. (U) On August 13, post received the following diplomatic
note in response to reftel B.
2. (SBU) Begin Text (unofficial translation):
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of El
Salvador presents its compliments to the Embassy of the
United States of AMERICA and has the honor to refer the
request for support by the Government of El Salvador for the
candidacy for re-election of Ms. Felice Gaer to the United
National Committee Against Torture, whose election will occur
in the month of October 2007, in Geneva Switzerland, during
the Tenth Meeting of the States Party to The Convention
Against Torture, and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading
Treatment or Punishment.
In this regard, the Government of El Salvador informs the
Honorable Embassy that the Government of El Salvador has
decided to support the candidacy of Ms. Gaer, taking into
consideration the fraternal ties of friendship and
cooperation that have traditionally existed between our
peoples and governments.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of El
Salvador avails itself of this opportunity to renew the
Embassy of the United States of AMERICA the assurances of its
highest and most high and distinguished consideration.
