¶1. (C/NF) Stefano Sannino, PM Prodi's senior diplomatic
advisor, told the Ambassador April 20 that Italy's support
for the Ahtisaari plan was clear, complete, and not nuanced.
The Ambassador stressed the importance of Italy publicly
expressing full support for the plan, including supervised
independence for Kosovo. The Ambassador added that he had
spoken to FM D'Alema just prior to the April 18 visit of
UNSYG Ban Ki-Moon and that D'Alema said he would make his
promised statement of support (see Rome 710) during the UNSYG
visit, but none had been made.
¶2. (C/NF) Comment: The Ambassador pressed both the PM's
office and the FM this week to make a clear public statement
in support of supervised independence for Kosovo. Despite
assurances that they would do so, we have yet to see the
desired statement.
Spogli
