Poloff delivered Ref A points and Ref B draft UNSC Burma
resolution text to Italian MFA Office Director for Southeast
Asia Giuseppe Mistretta and Acting Office Director for UN
Affairs Leonardo Bencini January 11. Mistretta confirmed
Italy's support for a UNSC Resolution on Burma (Ref C),
noting that Italy was convinced it was a good initiative.
Italy was working, through its UN Mission expert-level staff,
to facilitate resolution language that could be acceptable to
Indonesia. While Italy was fully supportive of the
resolution, Mistretta said the degree of opposition would
make it difficult for Italy to co-sponsor, as requested in
Ref D.
