TAGS: PREL PHUM UNSC BM IT
SUBJECT: ITALY SUPPORTS BURMA UNSC RESOLUTION
REF: STATE 1060
Classified By: Political Minister Counselor David D. Pearce for reasons
1.4 (b) and (d).
(C) Charge provided reftel points requesting Italian
support/cosponsorship for a draft UNSC resolution on Burma to
MFA Director General for Political Affairs Giulio Terzi
January 5. Poloff followed up with MFA Office Director for
Southeast Asia Giuseppe Mistretta January 5 and with Acting
Office Director for UN Affairs Leonardo Bencini January 8.
Italy strongly supports the draft resolution, Mistretta said.
Italy's had some minor comments on the draft their UN
Mission would share with USUN. Mistretta noted that the new,
more focused text made it easier for Italy to support the
resolution. When asked about cosponsoring, both Mistretta
and Bencini responded that the GOI would need to consider the
request.
