¶1. (C) POLOFF delivered reftel demarche to MFA Deputy
Director for Levant, Danielle Bosio and MOD Office of the
Diplomatic Advisor Antonella Remia July 5. ODC also
delivered the points to the Italian Defense General Staff.
MOD Diplomatic Advisor Achille Amerio told POLOFF July 6 that
senior Lebanese officials approached MOD Parisi, during his
July 4-5 visit to Lebanon, with requests for military
assistance for the Lebanese Armed Forces.
¶2. (C) Amerio told POLOFF the GOI was in the process of
deciding what kind of assistance it could provide and that
they would be in direct contact with the GOL when they had an
answer. LTG Castagnetti told ODC Staff the LAF had asked
Italy for 105mm(Tank) and 155mm(Artillery) ammunition as well
as TNT. Castagnetti said he had instructed his staff to
verify if Italy could assist, but commented he seriously
doubted they could.
