1. (C) Charge' met with Minister of State for Foreign Affairs
Ambassador Dr. Nizar Obaid Madani on January 7 to follow up
on several demarches delivered during the Hajj and 'Eid
holiday. Charge' asked for the SAG's support in
discontinuing broadcasts of Al Manar television on Arabsat,
as well as preventing the potential broadcast of Al Aksa (Ref
A). He noted that Arabsat continues to broadcast Al Manar,
which is of great concern to the USG. He expressed hope that
the SAG would take expeditious steps to address this issue.
Dr. Madani said he would follow up with the appropriate
officials.
2. (C) Charge' also asked about the SAG's promise to pay the
Government of Jordan for the transfer of 10,000 AK 47s to
Lebanon. Dr. Madani indicated that he had followed up this
issue following their December 23 meeting (Ref B),querying
various departments, but has been unable to obtain any
information. He stated that he has been unable to locate any
such request from the Jordanians, but would continue to check
and notify Post of his findings.
3. (C) Dr. Madani asked Charge' if he had any updated
information about the status of Adel Al Jubair's agrement.
He emphasized the Saudi ambassador to the U.S. is a key
position and requested immediate notification when a decision
is made.
