1. (C) PolEconOff delivered reftels A and B points March 19
to Liga Rozeniece, Head of International Organizations
Division at the MFA. Rozeniece responded that the GOL is
aware of the situation in Zimbabwe and that the Latvian
delegation in Geneva will discuss the issue today. Rozeniece
stated that, overall, the Latvian position is that "the
Government of Zimbabwe should act according to democratic
principles" and that "the recent violence in the country is
totally unacceptable."
2) (C) Rozeniece noted that the GOL will coordinate its
policy with overall EU policy on the matter, and added that
"the EU must go further to strengthen cooperation" on this
issue. She promised to forward USG points to the Latvian
delegation in Geneva and to suggest cooperation with the
American delegation there.
