(C) Czech Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg plans to raise
Burma's human rights record during the upcoming EU-ASEAN
summit in Nuremburg. On March 9, Poloff spoke with Andrea
Hyniova in the Asia-Pacific Department at the Czech Ministry
of Foreign Affairs, to deliver reftel demarche and to discuss
Burma and USG priorities for the upcoming EU-ASEAN summit.
Although Burma is not on the formal program, Schwarzenberg --
a long-time advocate on Burma -- will be one of six or seven
EU member foreign ministers that plan to raise Burma during
the summit, according to Hyniova. The EU plans on also
pushing for the inclusion of a paragraph on Burma's human
rights situation in the joint statement, although Hyniova
noted that it may be difficult to reach agreement on this
with ASEAN.
