1. (C) Poloff met February 2 with Frederick Junge, desk
officer in the office of Chemical and Biological Weapons
Disarmament at the MFA and delivered reftel demarche. Junge
said the MFA shares the USG's strong opposition to Iran as
Executive Council Chair of the Organization for the
Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). He added that the
MFA was eager to develop a common strategy with the U.S., the
UK and Germany during the February 6 video conference. The
MFA had not yet considered alternative candidates from within
the Asian Group, but would be receptive to U.S. leadership on
this issue.
