1. (C) Department of Foreign Affairs Director General for
the Middle East and North Africa Gordon E. Venner promised
PolMinCouns on December 14 that Canada would "certainly do
what we can in concert with other like minded Embassies in
Teheran" to seek information from the Iranian government
about missing Amcit Robert Levinson (reftel). He noted,
however, that in the wake of the December 3 expulsion of the
Canadian Ambassador in Teheran (following DFAIT's refusal to
grant agrement to two Iranian candidates in a row as
Ambassador to Ottawa),Canada is probably "not the best
placed to influence the Iranians" on our behalf.
