DCM delivered reftel points to MFA political director Kai
Eide, March 26. Eide said he was personally surprised and
concerned by the decision to exchange Taliban prisioners for
the Italian journalist. Eide stated that he shares the U.S.
view that this action puts everyone involved in Afghanistan
at risk. He promised to speak with the most senior levels of
the MFA to encourage them to speak to the Afghanistan and
Italian governments. He also said he expected this issue to
be discussed at the upcoming meeting of the North Atlantic
Council.
