SUBJECT: CYPRUS WILL "POSITIVELY REVIEW" WALKER CANDIDACY
FOR UN IAAC
REF: A. SECSTATE 149678
B. 148540
PolOff on October 26 delivered Ref A demarche to Vasilis
Philippou, a first secretary in the Cypriot MFA's
Multilateral Affairs division. Philippou commented that
Cyprus would "positively review" the candidacy of David
Walker for the United Nations' Independent Audit Advisory
Committee (UN IAAC). While understanding that the United
States did not enter into mutual support agreements for
candidates to international organizations, he nonetheless
requested that the USG consider supporting the Cypriot
candidate for the International Maritime Organization.
(Note: Ref B asked Post to request Cyprus's support for the
U.S. candidate to the IMO. In response to that demarche
(septel),the Cypriots proposed a similar vote swap.)
