PolOff July 6 delivered reftel points to MFA Multilateral
Affairs Attache Doros Venezis. Regarding EU member states'
decisions at the UN Human Rights Council (HRC),Venezis read
PolOff a statement from the (German) EU Presidency released
June 21. According to the statement, the EU had neither
wished for the Cuban and Belarusian Special Rapporteur
mandates to expire nor agreed with the placement of Israel
and the Occupied Palestinian Territories as a permanent item
on the HRC agenda. However, the achievement of consensus at
the HRC was a more important factor driving the EU's HRC
members to accept those decisions. Venezis asserted that
Cyprus agrees with the EU Presidency statement and that
Cyprus will continue to align itself with other EU member
states at the HRC.
