New Delhi for the week of June 4-8, 2007.
ANDRA PRADESH POWER SHORTFALL
DUE TO PIPELINE PROBLEMS

2. (U) The economically dynamic southern Indian state of Andhra
Pradesh is facing a 2000 megawatt power shortfall in part because
1750 megawatts of capacity installed by independent power producers
in the state stand idle. The independent producers are waiting for
natural gas from the offshore Krishna Govari basin to be piped to
the mainland. Technical difficulties and conflicting demands have
delayed the pipeline project, but industry sources said these
problems have been largely overcome. They told ConGen Chennai that
despite official statements that the pipeline will be operational by
early 2008, they do not expect gas to flow until the middle of 2008
at the very earliest.
