(U) Major Omani dailies on July 19 prominently carried
reports from the government-controlled Oman News Agency (ONA)
that Oman "welcomed" President Bush's call in his July 16
speech to hold an international Middle East peace conference.
According to the local press articles, an unnamed official
from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told the ONA that Oman's
endorsement in principle of the conference reflected its
support for "all initiatives aimed at achieving a just and
comprehensive peace that would ensure the legitimate rights
of all parties concerned and provide security, stability and
welfare for all peoples in the region."
