SUBJECT: ROYAL DECREE ISSUED FOR CITES ACCESSION
(SBU) On November 20, Econoff confirmed with Humaid al-Maani,
Chief of the Secretary General's office at the Ministry of
Foreign Affairs, that the Sultan had issued Royal Decree
117/2007, approving Oman's accession to the Convention on the
International Trade of Endangered Species (CITES). Maani
noted that with the Sultan's approval now in hand, the
Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Environment
and Climate Affairs would move to deposit Oman's instrument
of accession. Econoff also spoke with Ali al-Kiyumi,
Director General of the Ministry of Environment and Climate
Affairs, who expressed his appreciation for its passage after
15 years of advocating for its merits. He stated that his
office would work with the Royal Oman Police to ensure that
Oman upholds its obligations under the convention.
