1. (SBU) Political prisoner and "Malady Front" leader Dmitriy
Dashkevich's current trial on charges of failure to give evidence in
a criminal case (ref A) began November 6, but was quickly adjourned,
with a continuance ordered until November 9. In a closed court at
Penal Colony 17 in Shklov, Mogilyov Oblast, Dashkevich's current
place of detention, Judge Tatyana Kashkina ruled that the
proceedings must be delayed due to insufficient prior notice to the
defendant. Neither Dashkevich's father Vyacheslav nor A/DCM were
permitted to attend the hearing. Dashkevich, who is currently
serving an 18-month sentence for participating in an unregistered
organization, faces up to three more years of detention on the
current charge. "Malady Front" activists told A/DCM they expect
Dashkevich to receive six more months of detention, pushing his
expected date of release to late 2008.
2. (SBU) Dashkevich's lawyer Aleksandr Galiyev told A/DCM following
the hearing that his client was in good health. Galiyev added,
however, that during his incarceration Dashkevich had received
numerous official warnings for violations of administrative rules
and he implied that this might disqualify Dashkevich from
consideration under the pending draft amnesty (ref B).
