(C) Pol/Econ Chief May 3 delivered reftel demarche concerning
Zimbabwe's bid for the chair of the UN Commission on
Sustainable Development to MFA Minister Plenipotentiary and
Acting Director for International Organization Affairs Fouad
Darwish. Darwish was unaware of Zimbabwe's candidacy and
said he would pass U.S. concerns to the Bahraini Mission to
the UN. While recognizing that Zimbabwe is not an
appropriate candidate for the chair position, he noted that
other countries normally do not interfere in the decisions of
regional groupings on candidates. He acknowledged that
Bahrain could vote against Zimbabwe in a secret ballot.
