(C) The Ambassador delivered reftel information regarding
possible Bahraini participation in the Proliferation Security
Initiative Operational Experts Group (OEG) to Foreign
Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, in a January 15
meeting covering several subjects (septel). He emphasized
that the GOB would have to make a long-term commitment of
manpower and resources if it wanted to join the OEG, and
noted that Secretary of Defense Gates would likely raise this
issue during his meeting with King Hamad on January 18.
Reacting positively in principle, Shaikh Khalid said he would
advise the King of this proposal before the visit of
Secretary Gates.
