1. (S) DCM delivered ref A demarche October 25 to Spanish
Secretary of State for Security Antonio Camacho. Camacho was
SIPDIS
quick to say the red notices were fully justified and that
Spain had supported Argentina in the INTERPOL Executive
Committee earlier this year. He said Argentina could count
on Spain's support in the upcoming vote at the INTERPOL
General Assembly. He added that Spain was strong on
counter-terrorism and had excellent relations with Argentina.
He expressed grave concern about Iran as a continued
destabilizing agent in the world, but expressed the hope that
despite Iranian machinations, the General Assembly would do
the right thing and reaffirm the red notices.
2. (S) Post coordinated this demarche with the
Minister-Counselor of the Argentine Embassy in Madrid. He
had received similar messages on AMIA in his conversations
with Spanish officials (including its INTERPOL
representative). He also expressed his gratitude for our
support.
