1. (C) On October 26, EmbOff met with Milena Radenkovic,
Third Secretary in the MFA's Division of Asia, Africa and
Pacific, to urge Slovenia to press the ASEAN members to
disinvite Burma from the upcoming EU-ASEAN Summit and to use
Slovenia's participation in the summit as an opportunity to
call on the Burmese regime to fully cooperate with UN Special
Advisor Gambari, begin a genuine dialogue with the democratic
and ethnic minority leadership on a transition to civilian
rule. Radenkovic stated that the GOS has adopted no official
position yet but is working with other EU members toward a
common approach to Burma issues at the EU-ASEAN summit. She
also said that the GOS has not decided who it will send to
the summit, though she expected a decision next week.
Radenkovic noted that both the prime minister and foreign
minister are currently scheduled to attend meetings in Turkey
on November 22, so their attendance at the summit appears
unlikely; she emphasized, however, that the GOS has not yet
finalized its delegation.
