(U) CDA delivered reftel points to Ambassador Janez Premoze, Head of the COASI Working Group at the MFA Division for Asia, Africa, and the Pacific. Premoze stated that Slovenia supports the joint US-EU statement on Burma, the statement issued by EU Presidency Chair Portugal, and the UK proposal for strengthening sanctions against Burma. 2, (U) Slovenia requested a special session of the UN Human Rights Council to address the deteriorating human rights situation in Burma. Slovenia hopes that ASEAN will play a strong and active role in pushing for democratic reforms in Burma and that regional players such as China will use their influence positively. Although Slovenia supports stronger sanctions to demonstrate to the Burmese regime that the international community condemns the government's actions, Slovenia believes that the sanctions should be limited to those that will not adversely affect the general Burmese populace.
