1. (C) In a September 18 meeting with arko Purkart of the
Slovenian Foreign Ministry'sSecurity Policy Division,
Pol-Econ Chief conveye U.S. support for EU involvement on
the Lebanon-yria border along the lines discussed reftel.
Pukart described the EU state of play on a possible brder
mission, explaining that there had been a psitive, but not
conclusive discussion. Given th lack of political agreement
on how to engage orthe goals of a border mission, he said
that the EU was unlikely to speed up the process. According
to Purkart, the EU would probably send a fact-finding mission
to the region and, following the fact-finding mission's
report, take at least three-four months to get something
going on the ground. He noted that Solana had heard U.S.
concerns, which would be taken into account.
