(SBU) Portuguese National Civil Aviation Authority President
Luis Almeida informed post that Portugal supports the US-EU
Air Transport Agreement and will vote in favor when it is
presented for consideration to the EU Transport Council on
March 22-23. Portugal will also encourage other EU member
states to support the agreement and implied, without
specifying, that other countries besides the UK were areas of
concern. In the event that the March 22-23 vote was not
unanimous, the EC might pursue a "legal alternative" -
requiring a qualified majority instead of a unanimous vote -
to facilitate approval of the agreement, Almeida said.
