1. Post coordinated dissemination of reftel information to
the Portuguese Ministry of Defense (MOD),Ministry of Foreign
Affairs (MFA),and to the Regional Government of the Azores.
Our interlocutors at each of these institutions expressed
relief that no Portuguese positions would be affected. All
expressed thanks for the advanced notice and requested that
we keep them abreast of any further information. The MOD
representative expressed concern about further reductions.
2. Each of the institutions, representatives stated that no
press conference would be necessary. All three are prepared
to respond to inquiries after the information is publicly
released, particularly in regard to the continued employment
of all Portuguese employees, the global nature of the
reorganization, and the timeline for personnel actions.
