1. As expected, Gabon's new government was announced the
evening of January 25. There are few changes from the former
government, and not one of the changes is significant. Former
Prime Minister Jean Eyege Ndong has kept his job. The
government has increased by one (from 49 members to 50). In
addition to Eyege Ndong, there are now 5 vice-prime
ministers, 10 ministers of state, 19 ministers and 15 junior
ministers (ministres delegues).
2. In the previous government, there were 4 vice-prime
ministers. Jean Ping, who keeps his portfolio as Minister of
Foreign Affairs, has been moved up to a vice-prime minister
title, while Paul Mba Abessole, who keeps his vice-prime
minister title, has lost his slot as Minister of Transport.
3. Other changes: Pierre-Claver Maganga Moussavou (previously
Minister of Human Rights and the Fight Against Corruption)
has taken Abessole's position as Minister of Transport.
Denise Mekam'ne (previously Civil Service ministre delegue)
has become Minister of Orphans and the Fight Against AIDS.
4. There are 5 new faces in the government: Michel Menga
(Minister of Education),Blandine Marundu (Minister of
Culture and Arts),Edwige Nkeze (Civil Service, minstre
delegue),Gisele-Laure Eyang Ntoutoume (Housing, minister
delegue) and Rigobert Ikambouayat Nndeka (Communication,
Posts and New Information Technologies, ministre delegue).
5. There are 11 women in the government (the same number as
the previous government).
6. 46 in the government are members of President Bongo's PDG
party; four are members of parties aligned with the PDG. The
opposition parties refused offers of positions in the
government.
