OFFSHORE BAYELSA ON MAY 1
1. (SBU) Summary: American citizen John Stapleton, four
Italians and one Croatian national were kidnapped around 5:30
AM on May 1, off the shore of Bayelsa State. Stapleton was
employed by Chevron Nigeria Ltd. while the other five
expatriates were working for a Chevron shipping subsidiary.
There are no known injuries to the hostages at this time.
One fatality and several injuries were reported on nearby
security boats and a tug vessel. End Summary.
2. (SBU) Around 5:30 AM on May 1, John Stapleton, a U.S.
citizen working for Chevron Nigeria Ltd., four Italians, and
one Croatian working for a Chevron shipping subsidiary were
kidnapped from the floating storage vessel "Olobiri" 25 miles
off the shore of Bayelsa State. According to our sources,
the vessel's crew lowered a ladder to allow the militants
aboard after they threatened to use dynamite on the vessel.
Either dynamite or a grenade blew a one-foot diameter hole on
the vessel's deck. There are no known injuries to the six
abducted expatriates. However, one Joint Task Force (JTF)
soldier was reportedly killed and several other individuals
were injured on nearby security and tug boats. Chevron has
deployed a helicopter with medical supplies to the location
of the attack.
3. (SBU) Chevron had moved Stapleton from the Funiwa
floating platform to the Olobiri storage vessel, which was
thought to be a safer location, on April 30 after receiving
information suggesting an imminent attack. The Nigerian
security services and the Navy were notified of the
intelligence reports.
