-- Liberal Dr. Shamlan Al-Issa inquired in conservative Arabic daily
Al-Watan under the title "Fundamentalism and Moderate States"
(06/27):

"Apparently, radical Islamic fundamentalism has gained a secure
foothold in the Arab World. In Iraq, a civil war continues to rage
between Shiite and Sunni militias. To make matters worse, the
American coalition forces have armed Iraqi tribes. Tribal leaders'
allegiances are ever-changing and will usually go to the highest
bidder. More importantly, who can guarantee that the tribes will
ever disarm?"

-- Liberal Islamist/critic of the U.S. policies Dr. Abdulla
Al-Shayji editorialized in moderate Arabic daily Al-Wasat under the
title "From the Lebanonization of Iraq to the Iraqinization of
Lebanon" (06/27):

"At the outset of the war in Iraq there were fears of the
'Afghanistanization' of Iraq. Later, the term 'Lebanization' of Iraq
was used. Sadly, the Lebanese today along with all Arabs are afraid
of the 'Iraqinization' of Lebanon. This view is evidence of the
painful and bloody reality that faces us today."

-- Under the title "'Iranian Persianism': Hostility or Islamic
Identity" Walid Bou Rabaa' penned in conservative Arabic daily
Al-Watan (06/27):

"The Egyptian Foreign Minister was right when he said that Iranian
policies threaten Egyptian and Arab national security. This is
especially true of Iran's controversial nuclear program and its
defiance of international law by continuing dangerous enrichment of
uranium."
