Monday, May 07, 2007
-- Critic of U.S. policies Shiite conservative Islamist Dr. Abdul
Mohsen Jamal inquired in progressive Arabic daily Al-Qabas under the
title "On the Issue of Iraqi Debts" (05/07):
"Much of the debt owed to Kuwait by Iraq stems from the dictator
Saddam who used these funds to buy Arab rulers, officials,
journalists, writers, and actors who, during his years in power,
entertained and applauded him. Would it make sense then ask the
Iraqi people today to pay such debts? We must examine our stance on
debt forgiveness, for surely they will be written off anyway. But
the question is who will announce this decision and how?"
-- Under the title "Suicide Bombers: Where Do They Come From and How
Do They Multiply?" liberal Dr. Shafeeq Al-Ghabra editorialized in
moderate Arabic daily Al-Rai (05/07):
"The existence of suicide bombers in the Arab World reflects the
injustice, persecution, discrimination and racism present in Arab
societies. We have a culture of rejecting other Muslims before
rejecting non-Muslims."
-- Under the title "Terrorism in the Gulf: A Growing Threat" liberal
Dr. Shamlan Al-Issa penned in pro-government Arabic daily
Al-Seyassah (05/07):
"During the last few years we have seen the spread of extremist
ideas that not only oppose modernity and civilization, but call for
war against the notions of rationality, wisdom and freedom of
thought. Anyone of a different opinion is labelled as
blasphemous."
