COURT
REF: A. KUWAIT 455
B. 06 KUWAIT 3009
On April 3, Kuwait's highest court, the Court of Cassation,
upheld the not guilty verdicts of five former Guantanamo
detainees on terror-related charges. The defendants, Abdul
Aziz Al-Shimmari, Mohammad Al-Dihani, Sa'ad Al-Azmi, Adel
Al-Zamel and Abdullah Al-Ajmi, were transferred to Kuwait in
November, 2005, found not guilty at trial in May, 2006, and
had the verdicts upheld by the Court of Appeal in July, 2006.
With these decisions, two cases of former Guantanamo
detainees, transferred to Kuwait in September, 2006, remain
pending in the Kuwaiti court system. These two defendants
were found not guilty at trial in March and an appeal of that
decision is before the Court of Appeal.
