¶1. (SBU) Malaysia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) West
Asia desk advised us on May 7 that Foreign Minister Syed
Hamid Albar has canceled his planned May 12 trip to Baghdad
which we previously reported in ref A. Foreign Ministry
officials commented that although the intent was to postpone
the mission to a future date, no new date had yet been
decided. The Iraqi Embassy confirmed with us on May 8 that
the trip has been cancelled.
¶2. (C) In a follow-up conversation, FM Hamid's personal
private secretary (protect) informed us that the Minister's
trip was canceled at the request of the Prime Minister's
office due to security concerns in Baghdad. Although the FM
still hopes to go to Baghdad, his private secretary was
unsure when or if the trip would be rescheduled. "I was
going to go, too," the private secretary said, "but Baghdad
itself is just dangerous now."
