ATTENDANCE
REF: STATE 101170
1. Malaysia's Foreign Ministry cannot yet confirm high-level
attendance at the 2007 UN General Assembly. According to
our contacts with the Ministry's Multilateral Political
Affairs Division, United Nations and Disarmament Office,
information on UNGQattendance will be forthcoming sometime
in August.
2. Based on past precedent and informal remarks by Malaysian
officials, we believe it very unlikely that Malaysia's head
of state, the King, would attend UNGA. We believe that head
of government, Prime Minister Datuk Sri Utama Abdullah bin Hj
Ahmad Badawi and wife Datin Seri Jeanne Abdullah, will
attend, along with Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dato' Seri
Panglima Syed Hamid Syed Jaafar Albar and his wife Datin Seri
Panglima Sharifah Aziah Syed Zainal Abidin. In addition,
Foreign Ministry Secretary General Tan Sri Datuk Rastam Mohd
Isa and his wife Puan Sri Datin Norizan Sulaiman are likely
to attend.
3. We will follow up with the Foreign Ministry in the coming
weeks.
