SUBJECT: THE DEVELOPMENT AND EXERCISING OF AVIAN AND
PANDEMIC RESPONSE PLANS IN NEPAL
REF: STATE 50514
In response to reftel request, post has investigated the
Government of Nepal's (GON) efforts to test its pandemic
preparedness plan. The GON finalized its country plan in
2006, but has completed only a modest amount of preparation
in terms of training and provision of protective equipment
and supplies. Preparations have been delayed because the
necessary funding has only recently been confirmed. In
February, the GON signed an agreement with the World Bank to
implement an Avian Influenza Control Project worth $18.2
million. This new project is scheduled to be launched the
first week of May and includes the development of a pandemic
response plan. Post plans to meet with the GON's
Member-Secretary for the AI technical sub-committee of the
National Disaster Management Committee, Dr. Dhan Raj Ratala
the week of May 7. Post regrets the delay in our response
and will report any further findings.
