1. (C) Pol/C reviewed ref A points with Andy Rachmianto,
Deputy Director for International Security and
Nonproliferation at the Department of Foreign Affairs
(DEPLU),on December 12. Pol/C underscored that while Iran
may have halted its nuclear weapons design and development
activities, it continued to enrich uranium in defiance of
UNSCRs 1737 and 1747. Iran's decision to suspend its weapons
program in response to international scrutiny and pressure
demonstrated that such pressure worked and must be maintained
in order to bring Tehran into full compliance with all its
international obligations. Pol/C underlined that the
international community must continue to press Iran to
convert its tactical decision to suspend weapons development
into a strategic commitment to abandon all efforts to develop
a nuclear capability.
2. (C) Rachmianto replied that DEPLU would consult the
Indonesian mission to the UN in New York on next steps. He
did not offer any substantive comment. (Note: Other
Indonesian officials, however, have given us the impression
that the recent USG National Intelligence Estimate confirms
their view that there is no urgent need to pursue the matter
in the UNSC context.)
