1. (C) The GOI disputes a local news report that Indonesian
President Yudhoyono has declined President Bush's invitation
for ASEAN leaders to visit Texas to commemorate 30 years of
U.S.-ASEAN relations. At issue is an article in the
September 11 edition of the English-language "Jakarta Post"
to the effect that SBY had poured cold water over President
Bush's invitation. Indonesian presidential adviser Dino
Djalal telephoned DCM September 12 to underscore that the
story was not/not accurate.
2. (C) What SBY actually said, according to Djalal, was that
he could not commit at this point because it would require a
collective decision of those ASEAN heads of state who had
been invited. It was not appropriate for the GOI to announce
its own view of the matter without consultation with its
ASEAN partners. President Yudhoyono had specifically tasked
Foreign Minister Wirajuda to work on the matter in the ASEAN
context. Djalal underlined that the GOI was in no way trying
to be coy or negative about the invitation.
