1. (C) Pol/C met September 17 with Hari Purwanto, Director
for North American Affairs at the Department of Foreign
Affairs (DEPLU),to review reftel points. Pol/C emphasized
the importance of a united front re Iran in order to halt its
pursuit of a nuclear weapons capability. To achieve that
goal, it is imperative that all states demand Iranian
compliance with all of its UNSC and IAEA obligations. Such a
united front is imperative if we are to achieve the
diplomatic solution we seek and avoid a deeper crisis. The
USG strongly believes that the pursuit of additional measures
will increase the pressure on Iran to cooperate. We urge the
GOI to take these matters fully into account as it prepares
itself for the next IAEA Board meeting, which DG ElBaradei
has made clear will represent a unique and possibly last
opportunity for Iran to demonstrate its willingness to
cooperate on all outstanding issues.

2. (C) Purwanto replied that the GOI also gave high priority
to this matter and noted that Indonesia had supported UNSCR
1747 in March 2007 which widened the scope of sanctions on
Iran. The Indonesian government agreed that Iran must follow
up on all UNSC resolutions and IAEA obligations. Indonesia
will continue to monitor Iran's compliance closely. It will
be problematic if Iran does not do what it has to do, he
commented. Indonesia looks forward to continued coordination
with the USG at the IAEA on this matter.

3. (C) In a separate September 17 meeting, Pol/C underlined
the importance of this matter with Gembong Prijono, a senior
official in Vice President Kalla's office. Prijono said he
recognized the importance of Iranian compliance and urged
that all sides accept the need for a peaceful resolution of
the situation. Pol/C responded that the USG was committed to
a diplomatic solution, noting that continued pressure on Iran
to fulfill its obligations would serve that end.
