1. (C) Pol/C met with Hari Purwanto, Director of the North
American Office at the Department of Foreign Affairs (DEPLU),
on September 17 to encourage an Indonesian contribution to
the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (reftel). Pol/C noted that
the United Nations had established a budget for the Special
Tribunal and was in the process of contacting member-states
to solicit contributions for it. The USG intended to
announce a significant contribution to the Special Tribunal
soon and encouraged the Indonesian government to make a
contribution, even a modest one, given the importance of the
Special Tribunal and its role in the quest for justice in
Lebanon.
2. (C) In response, Purwanto said the GOI was well apprised
of the situation and regretted Rafiq Hariri's death. DEPLU
was unable to make any commitment at this time, but would
seriously consider it and review the matter with appropriate
offices to ascertain whether Indonesia could do so in the
near future.
