SUBJECT: INDONESIA SENDS AI SAMPLES TO JAPAN
Classified By: Economic Counselor William Heidt; reason 1.4(b)(d)
(C) Japanese Embassy DCM Satoru Satoh told the Charge on May
10 that avian influenza (AI) samples from three Indonesian
patients arrived at Japan's WHO collaborating center in Tokyo
the morning of May 10. Satoh said Japan had signed no
bilateral document covering the transfer, but expected to
sign in the near future some sort of WHO document setting out
the terms of AI sample transfers. Satoh noted the Ministry
of Health has asked Japan not to publicize the sample
transfer since Minister of Health Fadillah Supari plans to
announce the resumption of AI sample sharing in a speech at
the World Health Assembly the week of May 14. Likewise, the
USG should make no public statement on the shipment of
samples until Supari has made her announcement.
