SUBJECT: DEMARCHE DELIVERED ON IMPORTANCE OF UNSCR 1267 CT
OBJECTIVES
REF: STATE 65371
(SBU) On March 18, Poloff met with MFA International Law and Treaty
Department specialist Nguyen Dang Thang to discuss reftel points on
the importance of UNSCR 1267. Thang welcomed the information,
saying that the GVN strongly supports the UN Security Council's
counterterrorism efforts. According to Thang, Vietnam has complied
with UNSCR 1267, circulating the 1267 Consolidated List among its
relevant agencies and including the named individuals and entities
in its own "blacklist." Concerning UNSCR 1735, his understanding is
that the resolution is intended to enhance the effectiveness of 1267
procedures. Thang said he would report the information about UNSCR
1267 to MFA leadership and inform Vietnam's UN Mission about the May
22 briefing.
