1. The following is an updated "Law Enforcement Efforts" paragraph
with full year statistics for the Vietnam section of the 2006-2007
INCSR.
2. Law Enforcement Efforts. According to GVN statistics, during
2006, there were 10,783 drug cases involving 16,686 suspected
traffickers. Total seizures included 276.62 kilograms of heroin,
184.05 kilograms of opium, 645.11 kilograms of cannabis and 62,870
ATS tablets. In addition, 167,138 tablets and ampoules of addictive
pharmaceuticals were seized in cases of illegal bulk storage,
possession or transportation, or in the possession of groups of
narcotics users. Compared with 2005, twice the amount of heroin and
a significant increase in the amount of addictive pharmaceuticals
were seized, whereas the total number of cases and suspected
traffickers decreased 19.1 and 19.2 percent, respectively. During
the reporting period, GVN counternarcotics officials investigated
9,610 cases involving 12,451 traffickers, and the courts tried
13,019 traffickers in 9,621 cases.
